It depicts St. Seraphim the 19th Century monk of Sarov, who was canonized early in the 20th Century. St. Seraphim was a model for monastics: He began his life as a \"regular\" monk, helping out with normal monastery duties and chores as well as taking his place in chapel. Eventually, he was given permission by his abbot to pursue a calling to greater solitude. He spent years alone, with the wild animals of the forest as companions. During this time, he spent days praying while kneeling on a rock in a way remeniscent of the early Stylite saints of the Church. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter being severely beaten by robbers, he eventually returned to the monastery in obedience to his abbot. He then began his public ministry, greeting everyone with \"Christ is Risen\" and \"My Joy.\" There is a famous story of his being seen shining with the uncreated light of Tabor. A vision of the Theotokos led her to understand her fallen state and led her to spend years alone in the desert, allowing herself to be filled with God's love. Her story is a classic one, illustrating both the honored position of women in the Orthodox Church, as well as the truth that martyrs lay down their lives freely; they cannot be killed \"by accident.\" \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is said that Catherine was a high-born, learned and beautiful maiden of Alexandria, who publicly debated the Christian faith with a number of pagan philosophers who were put to shame by her wisdom. The emperor fell in love with her, and when she would not marry him, had her put to torture before execution. She is said to have survived incredible tortures, including being broken on a spiked wheel, which has become her symbol. Numbers of people were converted by her example. She was finally beheaded. Her relics are to be found at St. Catherine's monastery on Mt. Those who know her life understand how she gave up a life of wealth and glamour after the assasination of her husband to found an order of deaconnesses who nursed the sick and aided the poor in the worse areas of Moscow.  She was martyred by the Bolsheviks by being thrown down a mine shaft with her companions, with grenades thrown down after them.  It took several days for them all to die -- passers by told of hearing the hymns being sung by the survivors until the end.  When a rescue party came, far too late, it was obvious that St. Elizabeth had cared for her fellow-sufferers even to the end, bandaging their wounds as best she could\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The inside front cover of her note card and the reverse of the bookmark feature a verse adapted from her service: \"Concealing royal rank with humility, you honored Christ with the two fold service of Martha and Mary. With other monks from the Russian Valaam monastery, St. Herman reached Alaska in 1794. Their goal was to bring the Gospel to the native peoples of Alaska, as well as to minister to the needs of Orthodox Christians working for the Russian-American fur-trading company. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA series of calamities, including martyrdoms and shipwreck, eventually left St. Herman as the sole survivor of his missionary band. He was never ordained to the priesthood, and he was never able to learn to speak the language of the Eskimo people. Nevertheless, his great love for God and his fellow-man worked miracles. His care for the native people, taking their part when injustice was done by company workers, became legendary.
