A new saint in the Church, St. Elizabeth was a Grand Duchess of Russia and sister to the wife of the Tzar at the time of the Russian Revolution. Those who know her life understand how she gave up a life of wealth and glamour after the assasination of her husband to found an order of deaconnesses who nursed the sick and aided the poor in the worse areas of Moscow. She was martyred by the Bolsheviks by being thrown down a mine shaft with her companions, with grenades thrown down after them. It took several days for them all to die -- passers by told of hearing the hymns being sung by the survivors until the end. When a rescue party came, far too late, it was obvious that St. Elizabeth had cared for her fellow-sufferers even to the end, bandaging their wounds as best she could

The inside front cover of her note card and the reverse of the bookmark feature a verse adapted from her service: "Concealing royal rank with humility, you honored Christ with the two fold service of Martha and Mary. Purified by works of charity, you were brought to God as a righteous oblation. Holy Martyr and Grand Duchess Elizabeth, entreat Christ our God to save and enlighten our souls!"

Printed in red and black on heavy, textured cream stock.
