It depicts St. Seraphim the 19th Century monk of Sarov, who was canonized early in the 20th Century. St. Seraphim was a model for monastics: He began his life as a \"regular\" monk, helping out with normal monastery duties and chores as well as taking his place in chapel. Eventually, he was given permission by his abbot to pursue a calling to greater solitude. He spent years alone, with the wild animals of the forest as companions. During this time, he spent days praying while kneeling on a rock in a way remeniscent of the early Stylite saints of the Church. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter being severely beaten by robbers, he eventually returned to the monastery in obedience to his abbot. He then began his public ministry, greeting everyone with \"Christ is Risen\" and \"My Joy.\" There is a famous story of his being seen shining with the uncreated light of Tabor. Her story is a classic one, illustrating both the honored position of women in the Orthodox Church, as well as the truth that martyrs lay down their lives freely; they cannot be killed \"by accident.\" \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is said that Catherine was a high-born, learned and beautiful maiden of Alexandria, who publicly debated the Christian faith with a number of pagan philosophers who were put to shame by her wisdom. The emperor fell in love with her, and when she would not marry him, had her put to torture before execution. She is said to have survived incredible tortures, including being broken on a spiked wheel, which has become her symbol. Numbers of people were converted by her example. She was finally beheaded. Her relics are to be found at St. Catherine's monastery on Mt. He remained simple and humble to his death, even as a bishop, working his farm with his family, and with them, sharing their produce with the poor. Although his diocese was small and poor, he became well known and beloved through his humility. During the times of persecution, he was tortured and maimed as a confessor of the faith. Her feast day is July 22, although she is also commemorated in the Orthodox Church on Myrrhbearers Sunday, the second Sunday after Pascha each year. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlthough the Orthodox Church has never identified her with the unnamed \"woman who was a sinner\" in St. Luke's Gospel (Luke 7:37-50), Luke does tell us that Jesus had healed her of \"seven devils.\" She was one of the women who followed and ministered to Him in Galilee (Luke 8:1-2). She was present at His crucifixion; with two others she went to His tomb and found it empty. St. Mar tells us (16:9) that the risen Christ appeared to her first, and St. John tells us further that the Master gave her the message of His resurrection to deliver to the brethren. After her son became emperor, however, he treated his mother with great honor. Because of this, she was able to use her influence to build up the Church. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt was fashionable for scholars to scoff at her skills of archaeology, but modern excavations and scholarship have vindicated most of her work. She listened to the oral histories of the Palestinian Christians, and with their aid, was able to identify many of the sites of the Lord's life, ministry, death and resurrection.
